Wi-Fi Recabling and Upgrade Across 10 Student Accommodation Blocks
Description:
The Problem: The existing Wi-Fi infrastructure across 10 student accommodation blocks was outdated and unreliable, resulting in frequent connectivity issues and dissatisfaction among hundreds of students. A complete overhaul was essential to provide stable and high-speed internet access.
What I Did: As project manager, I led the end-to-end upgrade of Wi-Fi infrastructure impacting hundreds of students. Key responsibilities included:
Conducting pre-installation Wi-Fi scans to assess existing coverage, identify weak spots, and plan the upgrades effectively.
Coordinating with cabling contractors to replace outdated cables with modern high-capacity wiring across all 10 blocks.
Overseeing the installation of new access points (APs) to significantly improve Wi-Fi coverage and capacity.
Tuning and configuring network switches to integrate with the new APs for optimal performance.
Conducting post-installation Wi-Fi scans to measure the impact of the new infrastructure, which demonstrated a significant improvement in coverage and reliability.
Ensuring minimal disruption to students during the process by carefully managing timelines and communication.
The Outcome: The project successfully modernized the Wi-Fi infrastructure across all 10 blocks, delivering:
Reliable, high-speed connectivity for hundreds of students.
Noticeable improvements in Wi-Fi coverage and performance, confirmed by post-installation scans.
Positive feedback from students and staff, with enhanced satisfaction due to the improved network experience.
